Sulphates, or sulfates, are chemical compounds that consist of sulphur and oxygen atoms, with the molecular formula SO₄²⁻. These compounds are ubiquitous in the environment, found naturally in minerals on Earth due to atmospheric and terrestrial processes. Sulphates form salts with various elements, such as ammonium, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese and barium, and have a wide range of applications, including their use in commercial products like detergents and fertilizers. Structurally, the sulphate ion has a tetrahedral geometry, with Sulphur at the center surrounded by four oxygen atoms. This structure is stabilized by double bonds between sulphur and two oxygen atoms, and single bonds with a negative charge on the other two oxygen atoms. In terms of solubility, most ionic sulphates dissolve well in water, although there are exceptions like calcium sulphate and barium sulphate, which have low solubility and tend to form white precipitates. Chemically, sulphates can easily bond with metals, acting as ligands to form chelates, which are complexes where the sulphate ion bridges between metal atoms..
